    Autumnal walking on Dartmoor.
Spent the weekend in Dartmoor, based from Belstone. This post is a selection of the better photos from the weekend, summarised a little. For the whole shebang, see the original post - here.

    Machinists beware...
So, a long time since the last post. But caught a few pretties today, so thought I'd post:

    A crown of thorns:

Well, actually, they're a couple of bits of aluminium swarf from some machining I've been doing today. But the patterns are nice, or so I think...

    What a wonderful idea!

Methinks I might be trying that sometime - just pick a photogenic spot, word the note right, and see what you get back!

New toys! Nikon 105mm VR Macro & R1 flash...

And these examples are by no means the best this kit can get - just in the first 15 minutes playing around, not even read the manuals!

This little chap sits by my monitor, and is about an inch and a quarter high (30mm)

Oh, if that's what it can do, handheld, in a dingy indoor office / bedroom, I'm looking forwards to the butterfly season!

    Macro Lens Test
I've just got myself a new lens. So thought I'd post a few test shots; just playing in the garden, nothing special...

This one is a little bug, sitting on a Sage leaf. It's about 2.5 mm long - one of the tiny ones...

And a Hawthorn, just budding. Poignient, this time of year...

Sometimes, being in Bath Photographic Society is a pain in the ass. I feel I have to enter each competition, regardless how little time I have (I'm competition secretary). And then I have to find judges months in advance, compile all the entries and deliver to the judge in the week before the comp, and ensure the evening runs smoothly.

But sometimes, it's just worth it. It's an excuse to pore through old photos, working out what to enter this time. It's an excuse to go out and take something new; to get out and not have to get on with the endless lists of jobs... And it's a chance to share images & memories with others who actually want to see them. Not to mention that while compiling and registering all the other club member's images, I get to have a close look at their work, printing techniques, and just a close-up-and-personal viewing of work that is quite often exhibition-standard :o)

So I thought I'd just share a couple here, too:

Bath, at the Weekend. Mainly Mono...
Over the weekend, it rained. A bit. On my various wanderings, I took a few images, mostly in low light or streetlight, or in the rain. They've come out quite moody, but I quite like, so thought I'd share...

The war memorial at the Gas Works:

By streetlight, to get it all sharp & in focus (I was a foot away at the base) I had to go up to 75 seconds exposure on that one!

    Kickathon!
    Long time no update... Still:

Saturday saw me head over to a local charity Kickathon - Belarusian Ray of Hope, for children affected by Chernobyl. The Mayor of Bath opened the event, which was why I was there (Bath Photographic Society is keeping a record of her engagements over the year, and will put on an exhibition at the end of it). But stayed on to try to get a few shots of a Karate Kickathon.

    So, the pics:

The Mayoral Opening consisted of her placing the first kick. Lining up:

Had an Overdose of Cuteness at the weekend, so just had to share:

    Westonbirt Competiton
Well, thanks to [info]purple_jo, who pointed me in the direction of this competition - Autumn Colour at Westonbirt There's a lot of entries so far, and some are quite strong (have a look through the galleries at the bottom of the page...) My entry has now been edited and sent off; hopefully some will do okay though...

Piccies behind cut - 8 of them )

Judging is sometime next week (can't spot when, but I recall it was on the website somewhere) and selected entries will be on display in the Oak Hall, Westonbirt, from 15th to 17th December. That'll be worth seeing, whether or not I have any make it that far...

2006-11-04 West Wales - Fire Poi
Popped over to West Wales last weekend (Little Haven, a wonderful little village in St Bride's Bay). Lots of photos were taken... One memorable session was of [info]griff_wolf & [info]flannelcat playing with fire poi on the Point.

    Magical... )

    2006-08-06 HOG Rally
Went to Bisley for a shoot this weekend, and lo and behold, it was also the HOG Rally. An excellent event, and surprisingly family friendly, too. Lots and lots of shiny bikes, and noisy bikes, and trikes, and tents, chapters, and trade stalls with shiny things, and leather, and, and, and beer and...

Okay, I'll stop gushing long enough to post some of the better pictures I have of the event... )

How do you choose the best image from many, many excellent ones? [info]reflect_it community is the reason for the question - it's the monthly choosing-a-winner time, with a theme of water. The entries are all in This Post (linked). Mine are:
    1: Copaseticz (second image)
    2: Chemical
    3: Meowmeowbutt

But there's some seriously good'uns in there... What are your favourites? And what makes them good?

There's an LJ community, [info]reflect_it, which has got me playing. Some of the results seem to be quite good, IMO:

    Pond Fire
Well, while I'm waiting for plaster to dry, I may as well post something... Just a little something I knocked up last month - reflections of a 60W lamp at night in my pond during rainfall. Only minor manipulation needed!

Click the pic for a link to a bigger pic (2400 wide so it won't fit on a screen) - the detail is amazing... Unsurprisingly, a selected portion of it is my desktop... (Let me know if you want me to post a link to a 1024 x 768 image for yoiking...)

    Strangeness within
Taken last night, something that looked pretty ... weird. And came out quite well!

Westonbirt, 25/03/06, and local the woods, 29/03/06
Well. This weekend was manic, and very good... (See posts by andrewwilde and Purple_Jo for the details). And then today, in a hunt for a suitable tree for the garden, I popped down to the local woods for a photography session (read: which tree do I want, and how am I going to extract it from the woods to my garden!)

Without further ado, the pics... )
